Our first sample budget is for a single female, just out of college. We'll call her Sara. Sara has a paid for, used car that she received as a graduation present, a new apartment for which she just signed a lease, two credit cards she got while in college, a full-time graphic artist job at a sign company, and a cat. She sits down with a pen and paper and carefully comes up with the following monthly budget:
Sara decides to play it safe and figures her normal monthly income, for the purposes of her budget, as just two pay periods per month (even though two months out of the year she will get 3.): 984x2 = 68 and then she subtracts her total estimated monthly expenses of: 1868.76. Whew! She has 99 bucks left over; just enough to go out a few times to happy hour with her friends and cover a couple of miscellaneous items (clothes?) that pop up. Her health insurance is automatically deducted from her paycheck, and she figures the two extra paychecks per year will help cover vacations or emergencies (shoes perhaps?) that may occur. Not too bad. Let's take a look at another budget example...
For our second sample budget, John and Carla are a married couple with two boys. John is a utility supervisor who takes home 62 twice a month. Carla makes about 0/month selling hand-painted pottery online. John drives his work truck during the week and the family shares a minivan. Several years ago, they bought a small 3 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood and they have just one credit card they keep for emergencies. While John is at work, Carla works up the following in a spreadsheet on their home computer, by allocating all their funds to appropriate categories for their family:

In both of these examples, our budgeters did what works for them. There is no one right or wrong way to create a budget. Getting bogged down by details can sometimes abort your budget before you finish. So, when starting out to create a budget, keep it simple. As you get better at estimating items in your budget, you can increase or further decrease the level of detail as you see fit after reviewing your actual spending from time to time. Your budget is a 'best guess' at what you think can work for your personal finances - a written goal that we strive towards, but don't always expect to perfectly meet. Although the movie showed great promise as an apocalyptic event predicting the end of life as we know it there is actually no truth what so ever in its composition. The only valid point in the complete hypotheses is that everyone should have a survival kit ready to ensure their safety when we continue to experience our unpredictable weather phenomenon.

To start your list you would do well to have the usual supplies that one frequently includes in their bug out or go bag. Include items such as food, water and clothing while providing sufficient thought to both your shelter requirements and a means of transportation. Let's briefly cover each of these items in detail.

Food
I have enough food stored to last my family and I for a complete year. To test this theory we purchased as planned and then stopped buying additional food and used only what we had in storage. So as not to complicate the lives of my grandson and wife we decided to forego the use of powdered milk and like items during the course of the experiment. In view of the instability of our economy I would suggest to everyone that they too maintain a year's supply of food.
In our supply of food we included a mixture of canned foods and dehydrated or freeze dried products. We had freeze-dried vegetables, fruit and nuts. Although during the period of the test many of our meats were frozen we did have some in cans as well. Having nothing what so ever to do with 2012, we do happen to save replenishment seeds such as carrots, cabbage, celery, eggplants, potatoes and tomatoes. The purpose behind these seed banks is in the event we must drop out of society we would at least have the means to grow our fresh vegetables.
Since both my grandson and I are hunters and fishermen we keep a small supply of associated gear readily available. My near future goal includes learning the fundamental of trapping as well.
In our emergency tote we have the usual basic kitchen utensils, an abundance of storage containers which have the snaps on four sides. We have found these are not only inexpensive to purchase but are excellent for keeping pests from the foods. We have a dedicated set of pots and pans that are to be used just for such an emergency. Nothing is worse then to run around collecting items only to discover later that something vital was overlooked. This unfortunate situation happens even if checklists are employed.
Water
In our home we maintain five gallon water containers and in the bug out kit we like to keep a water filter of some type. The filter will allow us to obtain clean water in the field. Please be advised here and now that a water filter is no guarantee that the liquid is drinkable and safe. It is best to boil all water after filtering it.
Clothing
Clothing will vary according to the season that you have to bug out. Summer clothing will be different than that used in your winter evacuation. Unfortunately few of us are capable of transporting both summer and winter clothing at the same time so plan accordingly. In the winter you may wish to store up on boots, gloves, sweaters, a winter jacket and waterproof gear while in the summer time you may want shorts, T-shirts and light shoes. Always include an inexpensive sewing kit such as found in the "Dollar Tree" with each bag of clothing.
Shelter
A shelter is generally not a problem in my case as I am a firm believer in the use of RV's for bug out vehicles, particularly if you can find a small one that has a 4 or 6 cylinder engine such as is found in the Toyotas motor homes. In some cases you may have to purchase a high quality tent along with sleeping bag for all of the family members.
Transportation
Once again the matter of transportation for me is rather simple since I use an RV however for others it may be a bit more involved. Perhaps you will employ a SUV, van or some sort of bicycle or ATV. In areas that are prone to flooding you may wish to consider some sort of boat or water craft such as a pontoon boat.
Miscellaneous Items
Stock up on batteries, a first aid kit, waterproof matches; wind up lanterns and communications equipment. Remember it isn't 2012 that we have to be concerned with but rather our normal day to day emergencies and disasters.

I personally own a smart phone and I'm not saying they're no good. The truth is there are many good reasons to own one of these phones. I like to stay connected and a smart phone is one of the best ways to do it. I use my phone constantly, checking emails between meetings, surfing the web while waiting to be seated at my favorite restaurant, and even using my phone's GPS function to get to the restaurant. However, I didn't get a smart phone until recently, I really didn't think I needed a smart phone until I started my company, my internet store for cell phone accessories. A smart phone became a necessity so I could stay connected online to make sure my customers received prompt responses.

Now that I have established that I'm not anti-smart phone, I would like to point out why you may not want or need one. A smart phone usually uses more power than a regular cell phone, this means constantly charging it. A Motorola RAZR can stay on for 3 days; a smart phone used moderately will stay on for 1 day at best. If you plan to go on a long trip without an outlet where you can charge your phone, be sure to leave your power chugging phone at home.

Most smart phones also require that you get a data plan. This can potentially add another 20 to 30 dollars to your bill. Unless you plan to use the internet on a daily basis you will be paying this extra money for no reason at all. Save your money and buy the newest and sleekest phone every New Year with the savings.
Additionally, smart phones are usually quite bulky, adding a lot of weight and taking away a lot of pocket space. Sure there is the keyboard for those of you who like to text but you can get that same feature with some of the newer phones that have a QWERTY keyboard. Although it does not seem like it adds a lot of weight or bulk in your pocket, after carrying your phone months and months, it will get in your way sometimes. If you don't plan to use your phone for extensive internet use, stick with a regular cell phone. They're usually very sleek and most carriers offer a limited internet plan which allows you to still stay connected without having to worry about people asking you why you have a brick in your pocket.

2. Run your antivirus program.
One of the first things to do in the case of sudden lockups is to run your antivirus program. Check your antivirus manufacturer's website for updates and latest virus definition files. (This is absolutely necessary, outdated antivirus is not going to be of any use!) If you don't have antivirus software installed - or if updates are unavailable - run one of the web-based antivirus scans that some major antivirus vendors like Trend Micro are offering for free. 3. Run some good spyware removal tool.
If your machine is not infected with any viruses, it is still possible that it has some harmful adware or spyware is present. Download and run some good spyware removal tool such as AdAware or Microsoft AntiSpyware. Check http://www.free-antivirus.info for a list of free spyware removal applications.
4. Check for free hard drive space.
When no viruses are found, check out free hard drive space on drive C:. Make sure there is more than 20% of free space available; low disk space can lead to random lockups.
5. Check for overheating.
Overheating is another known cause of lockups. It can be caused by problems with fans inside the case, dust buildup, or other cooling problems. Make sure the power supply fan and CPU fan are running and free of dust buildup. You can check the temperatures inside the case by running Motherboard monitor

- make sure the temperatures are within the preset limits. Be very careful while cleaning inside the computer case (use plastic vacuum crevice tool) and NEVER OPEN THE POWER SUPPLY CASE as it contains high voltage.
6. Check the hard disk.
Check the hard disk - it is possible that its logical structure is corrupted. To check the disk for errors, right-click on the disk C: icon in "My Computer", select the "Tools" tab, check all check boxes in the "Check disk options" field, and press the "Check now" button. It should ask whether you want to schedule the check next time you restart your computer - answer "Yes" and restart your PC. The check will be performed automatically after startup; it can take a while, so be patient. The program will attempt to fix some problems automatically - however, if the hard disk is failing physically, it will need to be replaced. It is also a good idea to run Disk Defragmenter (located in Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools) to optimize data placement on the hard disk for increased performance and reliability.
7. Check the memory.
Sometimes random lockups can be attributed to the computer memory (RAM) starting to fail. You can test the memory by running Windows Memory Diagnostic that can be downloaded from http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp. If memory problems are found, try re-seating the RAM (pull it out and plug it back in). If it doesn't work, replace the defective RAM.
8. Check for other hardware problems (advanced users).
More hardware-related problems can be diagnosed by running hardware tests from the Ultimate Boot CD that can be downloaded from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com. However, you should only use it if you know what are you doing - some programs on that CD can be dangerous when used inappropriately (for example, some of them can wipe the contents of your hard disk).
9. Update Windows and drivers.
Some lockups can be caused by outdated software components - update your windows and drives by running a windows update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (it's good idea to run it regularly).
The above steps will help diagnose and eliminate the most common causes of lockups. Hundreds more of other possible scenarios need to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, as it all goes down to your particular computer configuration. Asking on PC troubleshooting forums/newsgroups should help you figure out solutions to not-so-obvious lockup cases.
