Household Budget Samples

Household Budget Samples

The following sample household budgets are intended to show a couple of simple approaches to recording a budget. The important thing to realize about these is that there is no one right way to do a budget. Some people are afraid of not doing their budget the 'right way' or that if they make a mistake, there will be serious consequences. Nothing could be further from the truth - the only wrong way to do a budget is to not do one at all. Trying to create a budget and not getting it exactly right or accurate is far better and more useful than not trying at all. Creating a budget is an iterative process and there is no school teacher that is going to scold you and give you a bad grade if it's not perfect. So, let's take a look at our first sample household budget.

Household Budget Samples

Household Budget Samples

Household Budget Samples

Household Budget Samples

Our first sample budget is for a single female, just out of college. We'll call her Sara. Sara has a paid for, used car that she received as a graduation present, a new apartment for which she just signed a lease, two credit cards she got while in college, a full-time graphic artist job at a sign company, and a cat. She sits down with a pen and paper and carefully comes up with the following monthly budget:

Income: 4, every two weeks (take-home pay)

Expenses, per month...
Rent: 50
Electricity: 0
Internet/TV: .53
Car, gas: Car, oil
Car, repairs 0
Car, insurance 6.23
Acme Debt Card:
YouOus Card:
Fluffy (shots, food, etc.):
Groceries: 0

Sara decides to play it safe and figures her normal monthly income, for the purposes of her budget, as just two pay periods per month (even though two months out of the year she will get 3.): 984x2 = 68 and then she subtracts her total estimated monthly expenses of: 1868.76. Whew! She has 99 bucks left over; just enough to go out a few times to happy hour with her friends and cover a couple of miscellaneous items (clothes?) that pop up. Her health insurance is automatically deducted from her paycheck, and she figures the two extra paychecks per year will help cover vacations or emergencies (shoes perhaps?) that may occur. Not too bad. Let's take a look at another budget example...

For our second sample budget, John and Carla are a married couple with two boys. John is a utility supervisor who takes home 62 twice a month. Carla makes about 0/month selling hand-painted pottery online. John drives his work truck during the week and the family shares a minivan. Several years ago, they bought a small 3 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood and they have just one credit card they keep for emergencies. While John is at work, Carla works up the following in a spreadsheet on their home computer, by allocating all their funds to appropriate categories for their family:

Monthly

Our Income: 24

Our Expenses:
Mortgage: 0
Utility company: 9
Internet:
Satellite TV:
Van payment: 0
Van (gas, oil, etc.): 0
Van Insurance: 7
Groceries, etc.: 0
Home repair fund: 0
Life Insurance:
Rainy Day Savings: 0
Clothes: 0
Boys' college fund: 7
Entertainment: 4
Christmas and birthdays: 0
Investment: 0
Charity:

As a city employee, John receives excellent health benefits for the whole family, so Carla leaves medical expenses out of their budget. She has wisely allocated funds for emergencies, Christmas and birthdays, as well as long term investment in addition to what John is already contributing to his investment plan through work. John and Carla have also wisely avoided excessive debt - limiting their borrowing to just their house and vehicle. And they save considerable money by eating at home most of the time.

In both of these examples, our budgeters did what works for them. There is no one right or wrong way to create a budget. Getting bogged down by details can sometimes abort your budget before you finish. So, when starting out to create a budget, keep it simple. As you get better at estimating items in your budget, you can increase or further decrease the level of detail as you see fit after reviewing your actual spending from time to time. Your budget is a 'best guess' at what you think can work for your personal finances - a written goal that we strive towards, but don't always expect to perfectly meet. Hopefully, these simple household budgets have illustrated that a good budget need be nothing more than a simple list of your income and expenses, catered to your unique financial situation.

Do I Really Need a Smart Phone?

Do I Really Need a Smart Phone?

Have you been contemplating about getting that sleek new T-Mobile G1 or that AT&T Tilt? Do you really need it? You'll be surprised how much there is to consider when you opt for a smart phone. There are many pros and cons to getting that smart phone that many associates at your local cell phone dealer won't tell you because this person is trying to sell you the most expensive phone in the store and its equally expensive monthly plan.

Do I Really Need a Smart Phone?

Do I Really Need a Smart Phone?

Do I Really Need a Smart Phone?

Do I Really Need a Smart Phone?

Do I Really Need a Smart Phone?

I personally own a smart phone and I'm not saying they're no good. The truth is there are many good reasons to own one of these phones. I like to stay connected and a smart phone is one of the best ways to do it. I use my phone constantly, checking emails between meetings, surfing the web while waiting to be seated at my favorite restaurant, and even using my phone's GPS function to get to the restaurant. However, I didn't get a smart phone until recently, I really didn't think I needed a smart phone until I started my company, my internet store for cell phone accessories. A smart phone became a necessity so I could stay connected online to make sure my customers received prompt responses.

Now that I have established that I'm not anti-smart phone, I would like to point out why you may not want or need one. A smart phone usually uses more power than a regular cell phone, this means constantly charging it. A Motorola RAZR can stay on for 3 days; a smart phone used moderately will stay on for 1 day at best. If you plan to go on a long trip without an outlet where you can charge your phone, be sure to leave your power chugging phone at home.

Most smart phones also require that you get a data plan. This can potentially add another 20 to 30 dollars to your bill. Unless you plan to use the internet on a daily basis you will be paying this extra money for no reason at all. Sure this phone makes you look sophisticated, but you really don't need to pay an extra 200 or 300 dollars a year for it. Save your money and buy the newest and sleekest phone every New Year with the savings.

Additionally, smart phones are usually quite bulky, adding a lot of weight and taking away a lot of pocket space. This might force you to wear one of those dorky cell phone belt clips instead of being able to slip the phone straight into your pocket. Sure there is the keyboard for those of you who like to text but you can get that same feature with some of the newer phones that have a QWERTY keyboard. Although it does not seem like it adds a lot of weight or bulk in your pocket, after carrying your phone months and months, it will get in your way sometimes. If you don't plan to use your phone for extensive internet use, stick with a regular cell phone. They're usually very sleek and most carriers offer a limited internet plan which allows you to still stay connected without having to worry about people asking you why you have a brick in your pocket.

Electric Trailer Brakes Rebuilding: A Story About How They Work and What Happens When They Don't

Electric Trailer Brakes Rebuilding: A Story About How They Work and What Happens When They Don't

This story begins when I offered to haul my friend's Aerostar van for him. He lives at the top of a very steep gravel hill.

Electric Trailer Brakes Rebuilding: A Story About How They Work and What Happens When They Don't

We drove the van on the trailer, strapped it down tight, set the weight distributing hitch and I headed down the hill. It was all going well until I hit the brakes.

Basically there were none. Only the fronts on the Suburban were locking. I pushed the big red button on my home made trailer brake controller giving them the full 13.7 volts but nothing. Well almost nothing. I was still going down way faster than I wanted to!

The trailer brakes should have locked up solid when the red button is pushed making everything at least slide straight - instead of the trailer trying to pass the Suburban. Talk about the cart before the horse!

The way the load was pushing around that Suburban, I was really glad I had not tried to tow with my little Jeep Cherokee.

Once that job was done I backed the trailer into the shop to take my first look at those trailer brakes. I have owned this trailer for nearly twenty five years and I have never seen inside the brake drums on it. I guess it was about time.

My inspection of the first drum showed me a little about how electric trailer brakes work. There is an electromagnet that pulls against the inside of the drum. The friction of the magnet against the drum moves one shoe that in turn moves the other shoe with a cam action.

Pretty simple. But I did not see anything wrong. The shoes looked fine, the drum was fine except for some scoring where the magnet rubbed. I put power to the magnet and it seemed to pull OK. But, the friction of the magnet against the drum was obviously not enough to work the shoes.

I could not figure out how a magnet could go bad, but that is what it seemed. Time for some Internet research.

I eventually found a site that said magnet failure was common on electric trailer brakes. So I went shopping for trailer brake magnets. Most places wanted more for the magnet than I could buy the whole backing assembly for. To get one at a local parts store I would have to pay more than I could buy two backing assemblies for. And new magnets are included in the backing plate assemblies.

Just when I was about to give up and order new assemblies, I stumbled upon Auto Safety House. They could use some work on their web site, but they have great prices.

I found a pair of new drums on e bay and I was the only person who bid so I got both for the price of one. Then the wait for Danny - my UPS driver - to bring them to me. Naturally the drums and magnets arrived on different days so he got to visit with my dog Smash twice.

Upon closer inspection of the trailer brakes, I noticed that I still did not understand how they worked. Something just did not look right about the way the cams worked. It sure looked like they would be stronger in reverse. And this trailer has always been tough to back up when the brakes are working right.

A quick look at the Dexter Brakes web site confirmed my suspicions. The rear axle on my trailer was installed backwards.

I decided the bearings did not really care if they were spinning backwards, so I elected to simply swap the brake assemblies left to right.

Having them off made installing the magnets and routing the not so little green wires somewhat easier. I found that some lubricant made getting them through the grommets a lot easier.

Dexter Magnets are identified by the wire color. The correct one for my 3500lb axles is the green wire. Nice they have not changed that in 25 years.

The magnets are held in by spring clips that are really hard to get off. I used a small screwdriver and a pry bar and bent them slightly to get them off. The new magnets came with new clips anyway.

I loaded the new bearings with axle grease and installed the new brake drums. They are not Dexter brand but the fit just fine.

The wiring is was pretty simple to reconnect since there is no polarity on the magnets. Just connect one wire to the brake controller power lead and one to ground. Dexter recommends running a separate ground wire but I just grounded it to the trailer frame like it had been done before.

Now my trailer has brakes again.
